The White Tie Affair @ Fubar, 11/24/09

whitetieweb1

On Tuesday, November 24th, the Traveling Talent Show tour rolled into town, headlined by The White Tie Affair with supporting acts Every Avenue, Stereo Skyline, and Runner Runner. At only half capacity, Fubar was the perfect venue for this Chicago pop rock band because of its intimacy and acoustics. (more…)

Weekend Show Forecast: 11/27

Theodore

Where: Off Broadway
When: Doors at 8:30, Show at 9

Theodore’s sound is straight out of another time – full of country roads, dusty phonographs, and just enough pedal steel to make you really feel it. The Saint Louis-based band will bring their unique folk/bluegrass sound to Off Broadway this Friday evening.  Stop in for a listen and maybe you’ll catch a song off of their upcoming album, slated for release in February 2010, or possibly their killer cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel.”

Headlights@ The Firebird, 11/22/09

After spending Saturday afternoon absorbed in the doe-eyed, dreampop murmurs of Headlights’ newest album Wildlife, I waltzed into the Firebird expecting a polite delivery of more of the same.  But when the members of Headlights arrived onstage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be an evening of sugary pop confection—the band ditched the prettiness and went for all-out rock, delivering amped-up versions of even their most mellow songs. Japandroids @ the Billiken Club 11/20/09

Japandroids’ Brian King, guitarist/vocalist, and David Prowse, drummer/vocalist, might not cross their t’s or dot their i’s, but in this new arena where less is more, they have come out on top. Minimalism is key, so save the convoluted, and cut to the chase. The formula is rigid: “Super easy chorus, super easy verse. You will know it in about 30 seconds” as King described his catalog when introducing a new song at the Billiken Club that will come out on a 7” early next year. It is always a beautiful thing when a band understands its own appeal. They never disappoint. Although the performance wasn’t flawless, they knew what they were doing, and they did it well. (more…)

Say Panther Tonight!

Who cares about shameless plugs – go see Say Panther’s CD release / goodbye show tonight at the Chapel with Target Market.  Go especially if you like Eleven’s design (our Creative Director, Matt, is a member of Say Panther, and designed the artwork for their new album) – if the concert sells out, maybe the next issue will be in 3D!

All Time Low @ The Pageant 11/21/09

alltimelowweb1

All Time Low, after rocking two previous tours this year, is on the road yet again – but this time headlining the first ever Glamour Kills tour.  Glamour Kills, an 80s-inspired clothing company founded by Mark Capicotto, made its debut onto the alternative rock music scene in 2005. Originally featuring the “when pigs fly” logo, these vibrant yet edgy t-shirts, hoodies and denim are more than just clothes—they are reflective of the increasingly popular LA pop-punk scene. Currently, over thirty bands promote Glamour Kills clothing, and four of those bands comprise this fall tour. Needless to say, the line for merchandise after Saturday’s show was as long as the line to get in. (more…)

Lykke Li – “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”

Sure, Sweden’s Lykke Li may be cute as a button. Sure, she may have had some production help from fellow Swede Björn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John. Sure, she has the voice of a Scandinavian angel. But her latest offering, a free download from her website, has proven that she has one more tool in her arsenal: a great taste in early rock. “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” is a cover of a Shirelles song of the same name. Lykke Li should be gearing up to record a follow-up to 2008’s Youth Novels, so grab the mp3 and quiver in heartbroken anticipation.

A sold-out show at WashU’s the Gargoyle marked the headlining conclusion of WashU Hip Hop Week, much to the delight of hip-hop fans and b-boys alike. But on a night that held the promise of poetry, there was but one letter of the alphabet that stood out: the letter M.  (more…)

On Sale: The Eleven Iconic Tee

Thanks to our friends at Sleepy Kitty Graphic Arts, we’ve printed the classic Eleven logo onto ridiculously soft Anvil 100% ring-spun organic cotton.  It looks good, feels good, and with a little bit of salt, it even tastes good*.  So take a gander over into our new “Merch” section, and pick yourself out a few; one for now, and one for when your roommate borrows it and never gives it back.

Go for it!
