Peter Bjorn and John can’t sit still. The three Swedes have created indie-pop anthems, remixed tracks by artists ranging from Depeche Mode to Miike Snow, and collaborated with Mick Boogie to release the hip-hop infused Re-living Thing. And, as anyone at their recent St. Louis concert can confirm, PB&J can play a mean cover of “Roll Over Beethoven.” We had the chance to talk with drummer John Eriksson about his favorite influences and why the hip-hop world can’t get enough of his band.

Florence Welch is the founder, writer, and creator of Florence + the Machine, a British indie rock/art rock band whose debut album Lungs came out on July 6, 2009 in the UK. After selling over 100,000 copies and receiving much critical acclaim, the album has finally found its way over to our home soil. As Welch’s first album, Lungs surprisingly managed to possess a grand marathon of faculty oft reserved for the masters or the mad.

Tomorrow, the 5th, Cherokee Street will be opening its doors to the community for its annual Print League Holiday Sale. The Print League is made up of some of the finest artists and printers in the city, who will be putting their art on sale for holiday shoppers and merrymakers. The event will be from 10am to 7pm, and if last year’s holiday sale was any indication, will be well-attended by many awesome people. But we’re most excited about the music! Here are three shows happening on the street that day:

Where: Typo Cafe
When: 5:00 pm
Safety Words is the newest hip-hop offering from the West Side, and represents an unprecedented sound: 8-bit music straight from your favorite nintendo games, mixed with some of the best lyricism from your favorite rap records. Sure, it’s been done before, but never this authentically; there’s no gimmick here. The Battletoads pause music might just be the next Amen Break.

A Classic Education put a shimmering production on this high energy gem – the quick, upbeat drumming brings urgency to the crooning of “in the back of my mind, yes I know, you gotta figure out a way of letting go.” This song is a great compliment to a beautiful, bright, and brisk winter day.

Volcano Choir, the union of instrumental rock group Collections of Colonies of Bees and indie-folk luminary Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), started simply from an electronic tape trading project. But the band’s sound is far from plain -layers of light electronic tones, guitar, and percussion mixed with the intimate resonance of Vernon’s voice make Volcano Choir’s debut album, Unmap, a sonic masterpiece. Eleven spoke with guitarist Chris Rosenau about the collaborative efforts in the creation of Unmap and how to come up with a good, fitting band name.

It’s been said that the bone dry dirges of Doby Watson’s Twenty Two were inspired from the cornering crises of Watson’s own twenty-second year. But these intimate memories are much less the balladry of a suburban cowboy and more the disturbing moans of someone, anyone caught in the nightmare of the past. XXII nevertheless locates a point at the end of Watson’s youth, where his soft, contoured reflection in the mirror seems to have suddenly shattered under some enormous weight. What exactly Watson lost is never clear, but some grotesque fate robbed it from him and blindsided him into a confession of loneliness and despair. The songs of XXII recount in broad lyrical strokes the grueling salvaging process of Watson’s fragmented yet vivid musical identity.
