Welcome to our new feature, the local profile! Every Wednesday, we’re going to be interviewing people who are involved in the St. Louis music community; not necessarily in bands, but those who are interested in seeing St. Louis become a better place for musicians.
Today, I interviewed Tawaine Noah, Barista at Foam Coffee & Beer and lead singer/songwriter in local band Union Tree Review.
How have you been involved in the St. Louis music community in the past?
I started like a lot of the folks around my age at the time: You’re in high school, and you start going to local shows. If you’re like me, you get really inspired to be that guy or band up on stage. So, long story short, a couple of my friends and I put together a small acoustic band, and luckily it’s not really all that hard to get booked in St. Louis. Eventually, we put together an album and started playing out.

As one of the founders of the French house movement, David Guetta has been rocking dance floors around the world for more than two decades. While he was in St. Louis for his DJ set at Home Nightclub, Eleven talked to David about the collaborations on his most recent album, One Love, and how to correctly DJ an airplane. (more…)

Langhorne Slim, a folk-rock/country-twang group of four – anchored by lead singer/guitarist Sean Scolnick aka Langhorne Slim – played to a surprisingly diverse crowd at Off Broadway this Friday. With almost everyone wearing flannel, the show looked and felt like a giant family reunion of hipster cousins and farmer uncles, and Slim played up the “we’re all in this together” vibe throughout the show with great success. Artists like Rockie have a soft spot in our hearts. They are the rappers with small, but dedicated, fan-bases of young hipsters who would like nothing better than to burn you a copy to bump in your mom’s Camry. In addition, Rockie is a bit of a hometown hero–if your hometown happens to be somewhere in the predominantly-black south suburbs of Chicago. In his premier CD, the rapper is true to himself and his surroundings; he appeals to the lower middle class kid who doesn’t own a gun or sell drugs, but knows someone that does. Lyrically sound and well-swaggered, Rockie is the type of artist that is probably well-founded in his belief that he could get signed if only his CD landed in the lap of the proper executive.

Daniel Victor Snaith, known to us as Caribou, has a new album arriving April 20th via Merge. It’s called Swim. Our first sip of the album, its opener, “Odessa,” is a rubbery electronic track, anchored by a deep, coolly familiar vocal sample that bubbles up as both spokesperson and hook. A more minimalistic composition, the malleable “Odessa” is a directly danceable stroke away from Snaith’s whirring, drum-lined 2008 spin, Andorra.

Oh, Japan, you’ve given us so much. Sony, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Panasonic, Honda, and Nintendo. Not to mention the countless famous musicians. Who can forget rock favorites L’Arc~en~Ciel (perhaps better known as Raruku an Shieru in their home country) or 90′s pop sensations SMAP? Alright, alright, the number of people in the Midwest that have heard of these bands probably numbers in the dozens. (more…)

Where: the Gramophone
When: 9 PM
Looking to start your Mardi Gras weekend off right? The party begins at 9PM on Friday night with The Hood Internet’s genre swapping mash-ups (one of my favorites, Weezer vs. Drake). The Chicago DJ duo has taken the internet (and clubs all over the states) by storm with mixtapes and performances combining Top 100 rap with under-the-radar indie, which is a surprisingly good recipe for an epic dance party. See you there!

Seeing Magic Kids open for Girls is about the most darling lineup to hit up St. Louis in a while (with the possible exception of GWAR’s annual show at Pop’s…). Their February 2nd show at the Gargoyle happily exceeded expectations, even without considering all the hard knocks that Girls, have been through. (more…)

With a lighting rig that would rival a Pink Floyd cover band’s and an audience that was, dare I say, unrivaled in energy, Umphrey’s McGee at the Pageant was a Midwestern delight. Known for their groovy tunes and jammy style, the group had a clear target audience (the Midwestern-type stoner type who inevitably will be in annual attendance at Bonnaroo) and one objective: throw a great fucking party. The Helium Tapes, a powerful rock and roll trio with extensive gigging experience in the St. Louis area, go tight-rope walking with safety net and corded harness on their second and latest release, Ghost Wave, which features heavy, multifaceted rock music coloring in and out of dirgy lines. The group, who recently downsized to a trio after the recording of the album, buzz and churn out pop-rock spins with a dare-devil vocal mistress cooing woebegones over canyons of her personal history.
