The first thing I noticed at the Sleepy Sun show on Sunday night was that the band is rather large. I feared for the worst, assuming that the opener was using size to compensate for talent, as is often times the case. By the end of the first song, I had revised my opinion. (more…)

With much hype surrounding his first STL performance, Franki Chan is ready to rock the dancefloor. And, we all have a good excuse to party – our new issue, Eleven 6.8, is hitting the streets! Chan is the leader of IHEARTCOMIX, a label bringing innovative electronic music to the masses. He has personally remixed artists such as the Very Best and Acid Girls, and Chan brings rampant energy to all of his mixes and live shows. Check out his MySpace for links to free mixes, and come celebrate with us at Glory Daze at the Gramophone this Saturday night – it’s gonna rage.

Chicago rap group BBU, or Bin Laden Blowin’ Up, rocks the mic as well as the dancefloor. With a rising career (they ran through SXSW and have a spot on the Lollapalooza lineup) and high energy live shows, the trio will be bringing Chicago upbeat hip-hop to the Lou with a spot at London Calling this Saturday. With one part psychedelic dance party, a dash of various samples, and a hefty helping of live drumming, the ingredients making up Pretty Lights’ set mixed perfectly to transform the Pageant into a surreal disco. Backlit by three massive LED panels and an arsenal of rotating stage lights, Derek Vincent Smith and his touring drummer (who played a kit along with Smith during the entire set) blazed through roughly two hours of layered beats, ranging from hip-hop to dubstep to house. Where: 2720 Cherokee
When: 9:00 PM
To an outside observer, Silent Soundclash must look strange – but that’s the point. The idea of a “silent disco” – where everyone on the dancefloor is rocking out to the DJs music beamed through provided wireless headphones – is something so advanced that we are only beginning to harness its power. Roll to 2720 Cherokee Friday night to become part of an experience that may become standard by the time the Fifth Element becomes reality.

The unhinged, debauched shows put on by Atlanta’s resident flower-punks – now the stuff of contemporary rock ‘n’ roll lore – are, by all accounts, not for the faint of heart. To the relief of Black Lips’ diehard STL fans, their show at the Firebird this week was certainly no exception. (more…)

Where: the Pageant
When: 8 PM
Electronic music-maker and dance party starter Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, is bringing his surreal, glitch and sample filled hip-hop beats to the Pageant on Friday night. Featured in our September ’09 issue, Pretty Lights has been steadily gaining national attention and just released new EP, Making Up a Changing Mind. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention: it’s free.
