On Sale: The Eleven Iconic Tee

Thanks to our friends at Sleepy Kitty Graphic Arts, we’ve printed the classic Eleven logo onto ridiculously soft Anvil 100% ring-spun organic cotton.  It looks good, feels good, and with a little bit of salt, it even tastes good*.  So take a gander over into our new “Merch” section, and pick yourself out a few; one for now, and one for when your roommate borrows it and never gives it back.

Go for it!

Last Wednesday, Eleven put on the first in a series of events to introduce St. Louis to its burgeoning music scene. After Ian Jones (aka Parisian, half of Safety Words) started things off, Cold Bear Scout put on a great show, and Philadelphia natives Grandchildren showed up later to play an absolutely mind-blowing set. Eleven’s HQ was packed with friends old and new, and we’re looking forward to seeing you all again in the future. In the meantime, check out the photos on Flickr.

Say Panther announces CD release, 11/24

Say Panther - As We Grow

St. Louis music scene staples Say Panther have announced the release date of their long-awaited (and long-overdue) album, As We Grow: November 24th.  In addition to releasing the album (which was, in the best St. Louis fashion, recorded with So Many Dynamos alum Ryan Wasoba), the group will play As We Grow it its entirety on the 24th at The Chapel.  Local indie stars Target Market will be opening, so you have no reason to miss the show.  Here’s a track from the upcoming album:

The Middle East – The Darkest Side

The Middle East, hailing from Queensland, Australia, have recently released an abridged version of their 2008 album, The Recordings of the Middle East. Having split and re-convened, the band is now playing shows in Australia and gathering a peculiar interest from indie radio play on this side of the much-larger pond.  ”The Darkest Side” was recently offered for download from Pitchfork’s Forkcast, cluing many of us Yanks in on the hushed and glowing sounds that the band had to offer.

Weekend Show Forecast: 11/5

Thursday, Nov. 5

Neko Case

Where: The Pageant
When: Doors at 7

Neko Case, the fairer side of New Pornographers and singer/songwriter in her own right, will be making a rare stop in our humble town this evening at the Pageant. Live, her voice is truly something to be reckoned with, while her writing tends to conjure imagery of all sorts of animals, from foxes to tigers to mollusks. The show is sure to be a religious experience — especially if you happen to worship tall redheads.

Ghostland Observatory

Where: The Pageant
When: Doors at 7

Austin electro-rockers Ghostland Observatory create some of the more electro-rockin’ party music you can drink to these days, and where better to do just that than a show sponsored by SoCo? This show promises to be pretty rowdy; with Southern Comfort providing the drinks, there will be no shortage of ass-shaking. Want to go? Text “ST LOUIS” to 68405 to get your free ticket.

The Aggrolites, Murder City Players

Where: Off Broadway
When: Doors at 8, show at 8:30

The Aggrolites, natives of Los Angeles, play some of the most soulful and honest reggae around.  Reggae is one of those genres that is often reduced to imitation, or else utilized by modern bands for the sake of having varied influences.  But real, honest-to-jah reggae is hard to come by these days.  For the Aggrolites, it’s all there, from Bunny Lee’s organ shuffle, to the “Simmer Down” ska of The Wailers.  Sure, tickets are $15 for those of age (and $18 for you young’uns), but you paid $7 to see your friend’s ska band in high school … think of it as inflation.

Built to Spill – There Is No Enemy

There Is No Enemy

Built to Spill, the ever-unchanging lineup of Doug Martsch, Brett Nelson, and Scott Plouf, is a staple of 90′s music nostalgia.  Their dreamy guitar-plucking and Martsch’s unassumingly simple lyrics have come to symbolize for many listeners, including myself, a time long gone.  But after a string of untouchable records in the 90′s, the oughties brought a lull in which BTS fans only heard a few jam-heavy records that hid the occasional gem.  But here, the silence is broken, the hazy and wandering guitar solos are rolled aside, and Martsch and Co. deliver There Is No Enemy, a proper BTS album that will be counted among their best.

Datarock – Red

datarock_cover_red

The Talking Heads have influenced a lot of musicians; you can hear the ghost of David Byrne in most toe-tapping indie bands these days.  But Electro Rock?  When was the last time you were at a club and thought about “Making Flippy Floppy?”
