Front Space (see above) is quiet – the echoes of music blasting until sunrise have dissipated into a nice Sunday morning. We pack our bags, say our farewells to our old and new KC friends, grab a Boulevard Smokestack Series brew as a souvenir, and hit the road to Columbia. St. Louis, here we come!

We awoke from our gallery home in the Crossroads district to the makings for a real nice day in Kansas City. Besides the mid-80 degree weather, sunny skies, and absent hangover, we had a brewery tour scheduled at one of the Midwest’s best: Boulevard. We race out of Front Space to the brewery, ready for another packed day.

The drive from Lawrence to Kansas City is a snap, and we roll into the Crossroads district of town in the early afternoon. Our hosts – Max, Leandra, and Sarah – have a gallery/apartment called Front Space in the heart of this arts district. The Middle of the Map Fest kicks off tonight, so we’ve got all afternoon to kill. Let’s hit the sights.

Lawrence, Kansas is the archetype of a college town. Anchored by KU, the life of the city stems from the over 20,000 undergraduates running amok. Well – maybe not today. The rainy weather and post March Madness blues (it’s still a sore subject for many) subdued much of the student body, but as the sun came out in the late afternoon, things start to pick up.

The week went by way too fast – it’s already Saturday, our final day of official SXSW festivities. The overload of shows, exhibitions, and music fans from all over the world was enough to last a whole month, and we only have one final day to take it all in. Better make it count.

It’s Friday morning, and we’re halfway through the South By Southwest endurance test: more concerts, beers, and tacos than one would care to count. The masses begin to gather on 6th Street (see above) earlier than on the previous days – the weekend was about to hit, and downtown Austin was about to kick into an even higher gear. We better get going.
