Cartwheel rolls like a group of recently grown up kids on a fresh summer day. It’s not that their sound is anything else less than mature – Cartwheel just has that exuberant pop rock vibe to which it’s hard not to reminiscence. Eleven writer Matt Stuttler caught up with Cartwheel’s Rachel Bowdon (RB, vocals/Wurlitzer), Jason Kozemczak (JK, guitar/vocals), John Hill (JH, bass), and Kyle Collman (KC, drums). Read the interview below!
Catch them on Saturday, with Adult Fur and Michael Franco at Off Broadway.

Chances are that if you have ever been to a local parade, whether in Downtown or Dogtown, you have either seen or, more likely, heard St. Louis’s Caledonian Pipe Band. The SLCPB’s 35 members play Scottish piping music for the STL community. During performances, the band struts in, five musicians per row, wearing archetypal Scottish garb – oh yeah, kilts a plenty! Their 16 pipers precede a percussion section consisting of separate snare, tenor, and bass sections.
The SLCPB is known to cause quite the din of drumming and pipes, reminiscent of The Boondock Saints theme song. When they’re not playing for the masses on holidays, you can find them teaching piping to students of all ages for free. Also, it wouldn’t hurt you to check out their video clips via slcp.com.

In Portugese, “joia” translates to sparkling jewel. The word provides a damn good definition for the band’s colorful blend of the dynamic and wild sounds of the percussion ensemble. Brazil, Africa, Cuba and Japan’s drum styles are all cited as influences. Conceived by Rick Kramer, Joia seeks to make their percussion performances as contagious as their derivative South American
culture and as accessible to us as the Slinger.
Joia’s rambunctious influences come together to form a hodge-podge of world culture, causing you to believe you could be an ocean away from home. Not too bad of an escape from the ol’ Mid-West for a while, and jump into the foreign world we dream of.

With spring in full swoon, and Tour de Grove on the Horizon, ELEVEN took a minute out to chat with the proprietor of one of St. Louis’ best homages to both biking and drinking: Tatyana Telnikova at the Grove’s up-and-coming eatery/drinkery/venue, The HandleBar.

“Why not?”
That’s the unofficial motto of part-lovable goofball, part-clinically insane, full-on artist and entrepreneur Chris Sabatino, owner of Art Monster on Cherokee Street. ELEVEN talked with Chris back in May to hear his thoughts on owning a business, working on Cherokee, and living the dream. Catch some interview highlights below, browse his website at artmonstershop.com, but for the real deal, head down and see him at 2617 Cherokee—he’ll invariably be in the midst of his latest project, and more than happy to share his thoughts on anything under the sun.

Joe Edwards hardly needs any introduction. If you haven’t yet heard of the local business magnate, or visited his flagship restaurant Blueberry Hill—a St. Louis staple by any stretch of the imagination—you may need your head examined. ELEVEN quickly caught up with Joe to find out about his latest projects, and more importantly, learn how he likes his burger cooked.

This afternoon, Fattback’s guitarist/vocalist Dave Hagerty passed away after being involved in a hit-and-run car accident on Sunday morning at the intersection of Kingshighway and Manchester. He was with his girlfriend at the time of the accident, who suffered a broken arm and is currently in stable condition with a few minor injuries.
In addition to being the voice of Fattback, a reputable St. Louis band that released their EP EEE PEE last weekend, Hagerty was also a co-host of open-mic Monday’s at Venice Café. Tonight at 9 PM, Venice Café will be hosting a memorial in remembrance and honor of Dave Hagerty.
Our thoughts are with Hagerty’s family and friends during this tragic time.
