Peter Bjorn and John can’t sit still. The three Swedes have created indie-pop anthems, remixed tracks by artists ranging from Depeche Mode to Miike Snow, and collaborated with Mick Boogie to release the hip-hop infused Re-living Thing. And, as anyone at their recent St. Louis concert can confirm, PB&J can play a mean cover of “Roll Over Beethoven.” We had the chance to talk with drummer John Eriksson about his favorite influences and why the hip-hop world can’t get enough of his band.

Volcano Choir, the union of instrumental rock group Collections of Colonies of Bees and indie-folk luminary Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), started simply from an electronic tape trading project. But the band’s sound is far from plain -layers of light electronic tones, guitar, and percussion mixed with the intimate resonance of Vernon’s voice make Volcano Choir’s debut album, Unmap, a sonic masterpiece. Eleven spoke with guitarist Chris Rosenau about the collaborative efforts in the creation of Unmap and how to come up with a good, fitting band name.

We All Have Hooks For Hands, an indie folk-pop band of early-twenty-year-olds from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has already begun to make an impact. Their second LP, The Shape of Energy, was recently released last month, and the band will be making their second appearance in St. Louis this fall at the Firebird on November 29th. The band has six touring members, and ELEVEN was lucky to speak with a few of them before their concert in St. Louis in October.

Hot off the release of her latest album, Beauties Never Die, electro-pop Norwegian artist Sissy Wish refuses to limit her sound to a single genre. Her album combines rock stylings with pop sensibilities – this translated superbly to an energetic live set at Cicero’s last month. Before her show, ELEVEN spoke to Sissy Wish about American audiences, the music police, and defining European pop.

Expert Wu-Tang swordsman Method Man has been slicing the best MCs in the game since 1993. With iconic guest spots on his fellow clansmen’s albums and a longterm collaboration with Redman (see Blackout! and movie How High), Meth has always had a strong presence outside his legendary solo career. Meth talked to us about crowd walking and Wu-Tang, but whether or not he actually smoked a dead guy is left up to your imagination.

Recreating 1980s classics in bossa nova style isn’t easy – just ask French musical collective Nouvelle Vague. But, with the imminent release of their third album, NV3, the group continues to craft laid-back, loungy versions of early punk and new wave songs. We spoke with mastermind Olivier Lebaux about his cadre of vocalists, his love of new wave music, and featuring original artists on covers of their previous work on NV3.

Few bands rocket into stardom like quasi-electro youngsters Passion Pit, whose two year anniversary marks milestones ranging from signing to a major label to touring the world. ELEVEN caught up with Ian Hultquist (keyboards, guitar) and Jeff Apruzzese (bass, keyboards) before their set at WashU’s fall WILD concert to talk about how they went from Berklee to music festival stages at the drop of a hat.

Proficient in all types of hip-hop, Serengeti knows how to spit. Whether its over experimental beats or just good, old fashioned MCing, any project he takes on is gold. We talked to Serengeti in anticipation for his show at the Gramophone (18+ for this concert!) this weekend on Saturday, September 26th.

Unassuming and undeniably talented, Ra Ra Riot formed out of simple class networking at Syracuse University in 2006. Only three years later, their upbeat melancholy tunes are taking large festivals like Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL, and Forward Music Festival in Madison, WI, by elegant, classically-trained storm. Alexandra Lawn, cellist of Ra Ra Riot, talks with Eleven days before the band’s St. Louis show at the Firebird on Sunday, Sept. 20th.
