It wasn’t hard to say goodbye to the last grasps of the dying St. Louis winter and hit the highway to Austin, Texas for the tenth annual South By Southwest (sxsw.com) interactive, film, and music festival. Well, for us: the music portion.
It’s easy to understand why many consider South By Southwest (SXSW, for short) a music fan’s best week of the year. Imagine: over 70 small venues and clubs, each hosting a new band, artist, or DJ every hour. New groups from all over descend on Austin to catch their big break, and world-famous bands are tossed into the fray with everyone else. From 11 AM to 4 in the morning, the streets of Austin are packed with all walks of live music fiends – from the biggest industry A&R type with a Platinum SXSW Badge to the freeloading college kid hitting up all of the free showcases and parties.
With all of the music and mayhem just on the horizon, the twelve hour drive seems more than tolerable. MP3 players and Google Maps on hand, we load up our freshly delivered Scion tC with the essentials (our gear, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Red Bull, and Rold Gold Pretzels), and set our sights on Texas. Here’s our short playlist – a mix of SXSW bands and Austin natives. Hope you enjoy:

- “Go With You” – Toro Y Moi (SXSW)
- “New York City Cops” – The Strokes (SXSW)
