The week went by way too fast – it’s already Saturday, our final day of official SXSW festivities. The overload of shows, exhibitions, and music fans from all over the world was enough to last a whole month, and we only have one final day to take it all in. Better make it count.

It’s Friday morning, and we’re halfway through the South By Southwest endurance test: more concerts, beers, and tacos than one would care to count. The masses begin to gather on 6th Street (see above) earlier than on the previous days – the weekend was about to hit, and downtown Austin was about to kick into an even higher gear. We better get going.

First up on the agenda – get lunch. Street tacos are in order, and we definitely need some energy to get us past that morning jolt (read: 2 PM). But the day is just starting for us, and with trade shows full of the newest gear and more bands than we can count on the horizon, it’s looking like it’s going to be a great one.

Ah, the first day of South By Southwest. There’s no going back – once we check-in and receive our wristbands at the Austin Convention Center, the musical onslaught gets nearer and nearer. Word on the street is that Jack White is christening his mobile Third Man Records truck in-person by playing a short set in front of his new mobile record store. Let the games begin!

As I write this post from the comfort of my apartment back here in St. Louis, it’s jarring to think about the music-blitz surrounding me less than 48 hrs ago. Hopefully my ears will stop ringing by the end of the week. Here is a summary of Eleven’s trip through the final day of SXSW:
We started out by attending a day party at the Rumbler Lounge, which was located at Peckerheads, a second-story bar on 6th Street. I caught the tail end of dancy synth-poppers Casxio – full of falsetto, sass, and funky guitar over spacey 80s keyboards, their set was enjoyable but not very original (see: every other 80s revival band). After grabbing a free drink or two at MPress Records’ showcase at the Soho Lounge, I raced over to the Light Bar to catch BBU, a hip-hop group from Chicago a friend was managing. BBU, or Bin Laden Blowin’ Up, were as energetic as their name implied – they performed their own brand of Chitown dance-music infused rap that kept the whole club shaking.

It’s hard to believe that we just passed the half-way point for SXSW. As the weekend finally arrived, even more swarms of music fans flooded the streets of downtown Austin – making what was already a mob scene even more manic. Read on to see how Eleven managed to kill another day at SXSW:
An afternoon snack was in order – Josh used sxswfreenoms.com (no joke!) to find what appeared to be free sushi at a show set up to promote new band, Nuke the Soup, at Kenichi. Not ones to let a good opportunity like this to pass up, we headed over to the sushi bar to check out the band – and of course, grab some free eats. The hospitality of the event was great – they even let me borrow some power from the sound guy so I could finish writing yesterday’s post. However, I can’t say the same for Nuke the Soup – I don’t think I need to give any more details past the fact that after the free sushi ran out, the restaurant became unsurprisingly empty.

I was prepared for the worst – I woke up this morning (read: noon) and assumed my notepad (read: wallet, Mino HD, phone, and…well…my notepad) were all gone thanks to a 2:30 AM SXSW nightcap set with Andrew W.K. and his band again – but this time with an open bar. With all of the action to be had on Day 2 of SXSW, thank goodness I took some notes. On with the show:
Killing 3 hours at SXSW is cake. I had lined up an interview with Donnis, a new hip-hop star who’s about to blow up, in the late afternoon, so I had ample time to explore downtown Austin. I met up with Josh and Ryan on 6th Street for some free bbq, and we set out to the France Rocks Austin day party. It would have been nice to catch electro-darling Uffie’s set, but alas, we were too late. However, tall-boy PBR cans and plastic cups full of Champaign (the French were throwing the party, after all) more than sufficed.

Overwhelming wouldn’t begin to describe SXSW. With 70+ venues in a 10 by 10 block area and a schedule where bands cycle every 45 minutes, figuring out where to go is almost as confusing as finding out who’s playing there in the first place. With this excited sense of confusion, we found free parking a mile away (I’m morally against paying for parking) from the heart of downtown Austin and made the trek to the Convention Center for check-in. After a good hour of waiting in multiple lines, our wrists were adorned with SXSW hologram bracelets, and we set our course to the venues.

Who would have ever thought that the Midnight run to Austin, TX, would have worked so well? At approximately 11 PM last night, we set out for music Mecca, SXSW: four days of countless band showcases – and that’s only counting the “official” events. Armed with hours of road-trip albums, notepads, computers, and a camera (but no official plan!), Eleven will share our experiences at arguably the most important music conference/festival this year. Stay tuned for updates, and if you’re here in Austin, be sure to say hi!
