For their first time playing St. Louis, the Dum Dum Girls made a nice impression on the Billiken Club crowd, clad in their trademark black attire and pumping out their fuzzed out pop through amps silkscreened with their band’s name. Closing out the night with a cover of The Smiths’ “There is a Light That Never Goes Out,” the California quartet left a crowd hoping it wouldn’t be too long before their next appearance in town. Japandroids’ Brian King, guitarist/vocalist, and David Prowse, drummer/vocalist, might not cross their t’s or dot their i’s, but in this new arena where less is more, they have come out on top. Minimalism is key, so save the convoluted, and cut to the chase. The formula is rigid: “Super easy chorus, super easy verse. You will know it in about 30 seconds” as King described his catalog when introducing a new song at the Billiken Club that will come out on a 7” early next year. It is always a beautiful thing when a band understands its own appeal. They never disappoint. Although the performance wasn’t flawless, they knew what they were doing, and they did it well. (more…)

Despite the fact that I rushed to SLU to be on time, only to find out that they decided to start the show an hour late, I had a great time seeing Alex Brown Church’s band Sea Wolf rock the small, intimate stage at the Billiken Club. The first opener, Sara Lov, crooned to the audience in her rich voice, her only backup band a record player playing her tunes. (more…)
