Q+A: Safety Words vs. Exercise

On Feb. 23, Eleven had the great pleasure of sitting down to interview DJ Parisian (Ian Jones) and Doctor Phelonious (Sean Price) of Safety Words, along with Bo Bulawsky and Trevor Berkholtz of Exercise, about their upcoming show (Friday, March 5th at the Firebird) What could have been a nice, civil discussion on music and philosophy quickly disintegrated into madness, when an anonymous Eleven staffer showed up with a case of beer and a video game called “NBA Hangtime.” Immediately, civil discourse gave way to barbaric trash talking and nonsensical yelling, and all hopes for a “normal” interview were tossed aside.

Weekend Show Forecast: 2/25

Saturday, Feb 27th

The Reeling Gilly w/ New Locomotive, Mike Kendrick and the Blue Eyed Sons

Where: the Gramophone
When: 9 PM

The Reeling Gilly create old-time, soulful rock ‘n’ roll.  Though we’ve got a few months ’till those lazy, summer days need a soundtrack, we might as well get a head start.  And to start off the night: Mike Kendrick and the Blue Eyed Sons provide the perfect, Midwest style Americana that’s not afraid to pack a punch.

Polysics @ the Firebird, 2/9/10

Oh, Japan, you’ve given us so much. Sony, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Panasonic, Honda, and Nintendo. Not to mention the countless famous musicians. Who can forget rock favorites L’Arc~en~Ciel (perhaps better known as Raruku an Shieru in their home country) or 90’s pop sensations SMAP? Alright, alright, the number of people in the Midwest that have heard of these bands probably numbers in the dozens. (more…)

Electric Six @ The Firebird, 12/30/09

Merging and weaving genres of punk, pop, new wave, disco, funk and metal, Electric Six invigorates eager dancers everywhere.  Kill (Oct. 2009) is the newest release from the Detroit based sextet, and their new material strongly resonated in the Firebird while the band destroyed their set in St. Louis.   (more…)

Weekend Show Forecast: 11/27

Theodore

Where: Off Broadway
When: Doors at 8:30, Show at 9

Theodore’s sound is straight out of another time – full of country roads, dusty phonographs, and just enough pedal steel to make you really feel it. The Saint Louis-based band will bring their unique folk/bluegrass sound to Off Broadway this Friday evening.  Stop in for a listen and maybe you’ll catch a song off of their upcoming album, slated for release in February 2010, or possibly their killer cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel.”

Headlights@ The Firebird, 11/22/09

After spending Saturday afternoon absorbed in the doe-eyed, dreampop murmurs of Headlights’ newest album Wildlife, I waltzed into the Firebird expecting a polite delivery of more of the same.  But when the members of Headlights arrived onstage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be an evening of sugary pop confection—the band ditched the prettiness and went for all-out rock, delivering amped-up versions of even their most mellow songs. WHY? @ The Firebird, 11/11/09

Despite the inquisitive nature of their name, WHY? made it a point not to leave many questions unanswered on Wednesday night at the Firebird. Armed with tambourines, maracas, and a distinct vocal style combining singsong melodies and fast-paced rhymes, lead singer Yoni Wolf swayed with the mic and delivered, compelling the audience standing only a few inches away in the intimate venue. I listen to the White Rabbits all the time when I’m just hanging out or driving – needless to say I really enjoy their music. But before tonight I’d never seen them play a live show before, and as such never had a clue just how rockin’ they really are.  Hint: extremely rockin’. (more…)

Keeping true to their name, fun. brought high energy, love, and a little something extra to the Firebird this past Wednesday.  The band entered the stage unassumingly and announced, “This is going to be anti-climatic.” But just a few seconds into their opening song, “At Least I’m Not as Sad as I Used to Be,” the crowd reveled in their lighthearted, quirky beats. It was clear that this show was not going to be a let down.  (more…)
