Their new album, Days Into Years, is a lively combination of their trademark mandolin harmonies with piano and an electric guitar (for the first time). Check these Toronto natives out!

GOOD Ideas for Cities at the Contemporary Art Museum

This event taps creative problem-solvers to tackle a challenge. Seven teams were chosen last year to represent St. Louis, and were given a challenge by local urban leaders. At this event, the teams will present their solutions to the challenge. Stick around for a Q&A and drinks afterwards to discuss how these ideas will become real for St. Louis!

Howler w/ Scattered Trees

-Why: You need to buy local power-pop mainstays The Blind Eyes’ new album as soon as possible, and this release show will be your first chance.

If you missed last year’s Red Bull Thre3style competition at the Old Rock House, you’ll have a second chance to experience eight of St. Louis’ best DJs fight to win the “party rock” crown: DJ Who, DJ Deception, DJ D-Mega, DJ Needles, DJ A-Flex, DJ Kue, DJ Uptown, and DJ Lonnie Bee. The rules are simple: fifteen minute sets, live mixing, and at least three genres. The rest is in each contestant’s hands (or timecode vinyl and Serato, to be more specific). And the stakes are high: the winner get’s to rep St. Louis at the national championships, and possibly the entire USA in the final, world event in Vancouver.

Although crowd participation is one of the scoring categories, choosing the winner of Red Bull Thre3style is left up to a seasoned set of judges with an intimate knowledge of DJing and the proper technique to truly rock a dance floor. Although 2011′s event is a global series, the original concept was born out of a Tuesday night event at a small Canadian club. Seeing it’s potential beyond entertaining a few Canucks and with some backing from Red Bull, the competition grew to incorporate many Canadian cities, and in 2010, the whole world.

As with last year’s St. Louis qualifier, Red Bull Thre3style is a quasi-summit for St. Louis club and DJ culture. With eight different DJs hailing from eight different musical backgrounds, each set will fall into a distinct style, and showcase different elements of the scene. Plus, quickly mixing three genres together seamless in one set isn’t trivial, either. But, considering the goal of each set is to best energize the crowd, be ready for a healthy dose of club bangers and hopefully some obscure, out-of-left-field drops.

Last year, the powers that be chose the ultra-talented DJ Mahf to represent the Lou in the US finals in Denver. Who will it be this time around? Be at the Old Rock House on Thursday, July 9th to find out!

Besides providing a great background for a story about DJ culture in St. Louis and the opportunity to rep STL on an international level (*wink, wink*), the St. Louis Red Bull Thre3style qualifier is going to be a kick-ass night of entertainment.  You’ll see eight of St. Louis’ hottest DJs battling each other for party rock supremacy, get a set by nationally renowned DJ Spider, and you might even get a Red Bull dumped on your head.  Well, scratch that last one – but, come out and support our DJs and help the judges choose who will represent St. Louis in the national championship this fall!

When you are touring with dynamite acts like garage revivalists The Booze and psychedelic glam rockers Earl Greyhound opening for you, you had better be prepared to kick some ass when you take the stage as headliner.  OK Go is hip to this and arrived at the Old Rock House armed with confetti cannons, hand bells, their own light show, and enough party-starting rock to hold their own on a fantastic triple bill.  On a packed stage in a packed house, all three bands came, saw and conquered.

OK Go w/ Earl Greyhound and The Booze

Though you shouldn’t rule out a synchronized dance routine (a la WILD at Washington University a few years back), OK Go will probably not be bringing their treadmills to The Old Rock House on Sunday night.  However, with new, moodier album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky in tow, the band returns to St. Louis with a more mature sound and, of course, the same electric stage presence that has secured them as such a popular live act.  Be sure to arrive early to catch retro blues-rockers The Booze and psych-tinged Earl Greyhound, who have just dropped a solid new album, Suspicious Package.
