Yonder Mountain String Band @ The Pageant, 2/20/2010

“I’ll do this ‘till the day I drop dead in front of you,” Yonder Mountain String Band’s Jeff Austin shouted to a packed crowd at the Pageant Saturday night. This was the second night of their two-night stand, and YMSB were going to leave it all on the stage. At one point Austin, the group’s mandolin player, even looked at his watch and said, “we’ve got an hour and forty minutes till they kick us off.” It was that kind of night. (more…)

Galactic @ the Pageant, 2/19/2010

For the last few years, every halfway decent hippie I know has tried to convince me that Galactic, the New Orleans birthed jam/funk/rock band is the second coming of Jesus, Buddha and Timothy Leary all in one.  So it was with high expectations that I headed to the Pageant last week to see the band touring on the strength of their new album Ya-Ka-May along with openers Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. State Radio @ The Pageant, 2/17/10

It is somewhat rare, this day in age, to witness a genuine performance. Whether it’s a rapper who writes rhymes about living the thug life but comes straight out of middle-class suburbia, or a punk band who sings of angst despite their charmed life, we have all seen some acts that are just that…acts. But to see State Radio live is to behold a group of people who truly practice what they preach. (more…)

Umphrey’s McGee @ The Pageant, 2/4/10

Photo by Isaiah Yehros. More on Flickr

With a lighting rig that would rival a Pink Floyd cover band’s and an audience that was, dare I say, unrivaled in energy, Umphrey’s McGee at the Pageant was a Midwestern delight. Known for their groovy tunes and jammy style, the group had a clear target audience (the Midwestern-type stoner type who inevitably will be in annual attendance at Bonnaroo) and one objective: throw a great fucking party. Keller Williams @ The Pageant, 1/30/10

As the second set of Keller Williams’ show at the Pageant began, it became clear that he was getting down to business. A one-man-show with  no opener, this was truly “An evening with Keller Williams,” as the ticket stubs had advertised. Just a few minutes into this second set, Keller began the looping for which he’s famous – and the crowd got down. (more…)

Yo La Tengo @ The Pageant 1/24/10

Photo by Andrew Dowd. More on Flickr

For the past 25 years, Yo La Tengo has produced genre-defying music that has received nearly universal critical praise yet little mainstream success.  In the decades since guitarist Ira Kaplan and drummer Georgia Hubley formed the group, they have released 12 studio albums, including 2009’s Popular Songs.  The back album art of that most recent album – a striking array of beautiful buttons- graced the enormous stage backdrop on Sunday night at the Pageant as Kaplan, Hubley, and bassist James McNew ventured through a perfectly paced exploration of Yo La Tengo’s impressive repertoire. All Time Low @ The Pageant 11/21/09

alltimelowweb1

All Time Low, after rocking two previous tours this year, is on the road yet again – but this time headlining the first ever Glamour Kills tour.  Glamour Kills, an 80s-inspired clothing company founded by Mark Capicotto, made its debut onto the alternative rock music scene in 2005. Originally featuring the “when pigs fly” logo, these vibrant yet edgy t-shirts, hoodies and denim are more than just clothes—they are reflective of the increasingly popular LA pop-punk scene. Currently, over thirty bands promote Glamour Kills clothing, and four of those bands comprise this fall tour. Needless to say, the line for merchandise after Saturday’s show was as long as the line to get in. (more…)

Matisyahu @ The Pageant, 11/2/09

Still touring with his the original guitarist, bassist  and drummer from his breakthrough album, Live at Stubb’s, Matisyahu’s show at the Pageant was very diverse and featured many of new cuts from his new album, Light. With the addition of keyboards, a Hammond b3, and a second guitarist, Matisyahu brought an updated, developed sound to the Pageant.

Mastodon and Dethklok @ The Pageant, 10/13/09

Mastodon and Dethklok: surely two of the biggest names in the metal scene today, if for totally different reasons—Mastodon for their trademark brand of prog rock/sludge metal fusion, Dethklok as the fictional band from the Adult Swim cartoon “Metalocalypse.”  Regardless of their differences, with these two heavy hitters teaming up to headline, many a metalhead was lined up at the door of the Pageant to witness this monster of a show.  (more…)
