Sleepy Sun @ The Pageant, 4/12/2010

The first thing I noticed at the Sleepy Sun show on Sunday night was that the band is rather large. I feared for the worst, assuming that the opener was using size to compensate for talent, as is often times the case. By the end of the first song, I had revised my opinion. (more…)

Pretty Lights @ The Pageant, 4/9/2010

With one part psychedelic dance party, a dash of various samples, and a hefty helping of live drumming, the ingredients making up Pretty Lights’ set mixed perfectly to transform the Pageant into a surreal disco.  Backlit by three massive LED panels and an arsenal of rotating stage lights, Derek Vincent Smith and his touring drummer (who played a kit along with Smith during the entire set) blazed through roughly two hours of layered beats, ranging from hip-hop to dubstep to house.   (more…)

After dating the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Alia Shawkat (perhaps better known as Maeby Fünke), it’s hard to imagine being excited about much else in life, but when lead singer Jack Antonoff and his band Steel Train took the stage at the Pageant, their energy was almost overwhelming. (more…)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ The Pageant, 3/23/2010

It’s one thing to say a show is not dull or disappointing, but quite another for it to be the irresistible display of musical coitus that Black Rebel Motorcycle Club delivered this past Tuesday night at the Pageant.  The California trio of Robert Levon Been, Peter Hayes, and Leah Shapiro has mastered the slow buildup – demonstrative in everything from their understated black attire to their tightlipped stage presence – making you feel that, despite being surrounded by plethora of shamelessly aroused fellow concert-goers, you’ve stumbled into the most intimate of settings.   (more…)

Flogging Molly w/ the Architects and Frank Turner @ the Pageant, 3/10/2010

“How the fuck are you St. Louis?”  We’re great, Architects, thanks for asking.  The opening act for Flogging Molly Wednesday at the Pageant was a four piece outfit from “down the road” Kansas City, and they definitely brought rock ‘n’ roll with them.  Easy to handle, straightforward rock that your mother wouldn’t scour at.  Oh – and they’re fast.  It seems like it took less time for the Architects to play their first 3 songs than it took Jason (our photographer) to snap a shot.   (more…)

Rodrigo y Gabriela @ The Pageant, 3/9/2010

Rodrigo y Gabriela play acoustic guitar. But, don’t make the mistake of expecting a flamenco set from this duo – they play all out rock ‘n’ roll, and their concert at the Pageant was no exception. The set opened against a backdrop of red slashes, foreshadowing the rush of sound that was to come. (more…)

Yonder Mountain String Band @ The Pageant, 2/20/2010

Photo by Nathan Burrell. More on Flickr

“I’ll do this ‘till the day I drop dead in front of you,” Yonder Mountain String Band’s Jeff Austin shouted to a packed crowd at the Pageant Saturday night. This was the second night of their two-night stand, and YMSB were going to leave it all on the stage. At one point Austin, the group’s mandolin player, even looked at his watch and said, “we’ve got an hour and forty minutes till they kick us off.” It was that kind of night. (more…)
