Neko Case

Where: The Pageant
When: Doors at 7

Neko Case, the fairer side of New Pornographers and singer/songwriter in her own right, will be making a rare stop in our humble town this evening at the Pageant. Live, her voice is truly something to be reckoned with, while her writing tends to conjure imagery of all sorts of animals, from foxes to tigers to mollusks. The show is sure to be a religious experience — especially if you happen to worship tall redheads.

Son Volt

Where: The Pageant
When: Doors at 7

After fathering the modern folk-rock movement with Jeff Tweedy in Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar set off with Mike Heidorn to create Son Volt, a continuation of the folk sound that earned Uncle Tupelo a special place in so many indie kids’ hearts. As a native of Millstadt, Farrar will be making the trip home to play for a hometown crowd at the pageant. Check out the band before Farrar sets off with Ben Gibbard to support their upcoming album, a full-length of songs inspired by Kerouac.

Saturday, Nov. 7

Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship

Where: The Gramophone
When: Doors at 9:45, show at 10:15

Ok, Ok. If you’ve been to a SYYR show before, I know what you’re thinking. “So I’ve had Corey Goodman’s finger in my ear once. Why undo all those years of counseling I had to forget it?” Simple: it’s free this time. Yes, a free Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship show. Can’t believe your ears? It’s probably because Corey’s finger is in one of them again. (If you haven’t been to a SYYR show, then you have to go. It’s required reading.)

Sunday, Nov. 8

Doodlebug and Butterfly of Digable Planets

Where: Old Rock House
When: Show at 8

Digable Planets helped to kick-start the “cool rap” vibe of the early 90′s, along with groups like A Tribe Called Quest. That the pan-american duo of Doodlebug and Butterfly would stop in and play a set in St. Louis is a remarkable event. Nato Caliph, DJ Crucial, and The Spacetones will all be there to represent the ‘Lou; shouldn’t you be too?
