Mayer Hawthorne & The Country are coming to the Firebird as part of their How Do You Do World Tour, presented by KDHX 88.1. Mayer Hawthorne, a Michigan native in thick-rimmed glasses and a suit, is an unexpected crooner. This contemporary soul singer and multi-instrumentalist has a sound that is rooted in retro. Openers The Stepkids are an electro-soul trio of singer-songwriters. Each song is written with equal input from all three members and in this case, three heads are definitely better than one. This show is open to all ages and tickets are $16.

St. Louis’ acoustic blues trio, the Bottoms Up Blues Gang, are performing at The Sheldon. Vocalist Kari Liston, guitarist Jeremy Segel-Moss, and harmonica-player Adam Andrews are dedicated to preserving the tradition of St. Louis blues music while leaving their own mark as a powerful St. Louis blues group. WEDNESDAY, May 23rd

Legendary bassist Stanley Clarke will be performing at Jazz at the Bistro as part of an acoustic trio. Playing with Clarke will be Ruslan Sirota on piano and keyboards and Ronald Bruner on drums. Jazz and bass enthusiasts cannot miss the chance to witness one of Clarke’s famous bass solos. Tickets are $35 or $20 with a valid student ID.

No Coast Skateboards and the Arch Rival Roller Girls All Stars are hosting a fund-raiser at the Gramophone. The profits go to the ARRG All Stars so that they can travel around the United States representing St. Louis. The event will be a fun night of partying with DJs Ryan Snowden, Gabe the BABE, and Mark Willey, drinks, games, and contests. The party starts at 7pm and goes till midnight. There is a $5 cover.
THURSDAY, May 24th

Southern Culture On The Skids is coming to Off Broadway. This rock band from North Carolina, known as SCOTS by their fans, is a chaotic mix of Southern culture and freak-pride. The trio have been performing together for over twenty years and are showing no signs of calming down. Indie rock group Lookout Joe will also be performing. Doors open at 8:30pm and tickets are $15.

KDHX 88.1 presents a night full of folk at the Firebird. Portland-based indie/folk band, Horse Feathers, are the headliners and will be performing along with banjo-playing alternative folk artist, Matt Bauer, and St. Louis locals, folk band Indian Blanket. Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are $12. This show is open to all ages.
FRIDAY, May 25th

Head down to Plush for a Loud Label Showcase featuring The Truth, Superhero Killer, Treehouse, and Luster. The headliner will be local singer-songwriter and pianist Jesse Gannon and his band, The Truth, have a sound that’s a unique mixture of pop and soul. Despite their violent name, Superhero Killer is a deep-soul foursome with blues and funk influences. Treehouse is a local rock band formed in 2011. Standing out in a mainly St. Louis-based showcase, Luster of Chicago is an indie/alternative group.

2720 Cherokee is hosting a night of reggae with the legendary Mighty Diamonds, a reggae harmony trio from Jamaica, and local reggae group, Zion & The Lion Roots Band. Also performing will be Iron Curtain HiFi featuring KDHX 88.1 DJ Michael Kuelker and The Mad Russian. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $15. The show is open to those 18 and up.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are playing at the Old Rock House. This New Orleans-based brass band has been playing for over 35 years. They’ll be using those many years of experience and a traditional New Orleans sound flavoured with musical influences from across the board to put on an unforgettable show. Opener Snarky Puppy is a collective of Dallas and New York City musicians with over 25 individual players in regular rotation. Together they create a distinct mix of jazz, funk, and world music. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $20 at the door. The show is open to those 18 and up.

Snoop Dogg is playing a show at Pop’s in Sauget, Illinois. Also performing will be California’s Steady P and St. Louis’ DJ Mahf. This show needs no explanation as to why it will be a wildly good time, Snoop Dogg’s career speaks for itself. But, let Snoop Dogg provide the good time and leave your copy of Snoop Dogg’s smokable songbook with a strike paper spine at home. The show starts at 7pm and tickets are $35 the day of the show.
SATURDAY, May 26th

Old Rock House welcomes Split Lip Rayfield. Though the name sounds like an underground prize fighter, Split Lip Rayfield is actually a Kansas-based bluegrass/country trio with a bit of metal influence. The trio’s reputation promises a powerful performance. St. Louis music veterans, Joe Stickley and Sean Canan will also be performing. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $15. The show is open to all ages.

The Dead Kenny G’s will be playing at 2720 Cherokee. An experimental punk/jazz trio, the Dead Kenny G’s are made up of Skerik, Mike Dillon, and Brad Houser. This Seatle-based group has been labelled the exact opposite of easy listening. So, if you’re in the mood to relax, this is not the show for you. But, if you’re in the mood for some explosive punk twinged jazz, then you need to head to 2720 Cherokee for the Dead Kenny G’s. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $10. The show is open to those 18 and up.

Here at Eleven, we don’t usually report on cover bands, but if you’re in the mood for authentic 70s rock, then you can’t go wrong with local tribute band SuperJam. This band is a flashback to the golden age of arena rock and they are playing a show at the Broadway Oyster Bar from 10pm to 2am.
SUNDAY, May 27th

Is there anything better than good food and awesome music? Don’t waste time trying to come up with an answer and just head down to Off Broadway for the Big Muddy Chili Cook-Off. Kick off the summer with a bowl of chili and some great local music. Doors open at 1:30pm and chili is served at 2pm. Admission is $10, including the chili. Then, as you eat, you can enjoy performances by the Rum Drum Ramblers, Hooten Hallers, Bob Reuter’s Alley Ghost, Griddle Kids, Trio Project, Royal Smokestacks, The Skekses, The Hobosexuals, Lonesome Cowboy Ryan, Banjo Kellie, Chris Baricevic, and Jack Grelle.
